Girona rejected 303 of 521 protection orders for gender violence in 2025

The courts of the province of Girona denied 303 of the 521 protection orders initiated during 2025 in cases of gender violence. The figure represents 58.2% of the total requests processed throughout the year. In that same period, 218 protection measures were adopted.

The volume of complaints remained practically stable. In 2025, 2,960 were registered, just four less than the 2,964 of the previous year. The number of victims also slightly decreased, going from 2,761 in 2024 to 2,726 women in 2025.

More police intervention and more complaints from relatives

The majority of the protection orders were requested by the victim herself. Of the 521 initiated, 518 originated from the affected woman, two were requested by the Public Prosecutor's Office and one was agreed ex officio.

Where a change is indeed seen is in the origin of part of the complaints. Those derived from direct police actions rose from 253 to 363 in one year. Also grew strongly those presented by relatives, which went from 27 to 69.

At the same time, the number of women who availed themselves of the exemption from the obligation to testify against the alleged aggressor increased. There were 391 in 2025 compared to 342 in 2024.

Foreign victims and affected minors under guardianship rise

The evolution by nationality reflects a decrease among Spanish victims and an increase among foreign ones. The former went from 1,437 to 1,366, while the latter grew from 1,324 to 1,360.

Another of the most significant upturns affects minors under guardianship who are victims of gender violence, which went from 1 case in 2024 to 6 in 2025.

Fall the penal measures and rise some civil decisions

During 2025, 400 penal measures were adopted, below the 511 agreed upon the previous year. Among them, restraining orders decreased from 155 to 147 and communication prohibitions decreased from 228 to 201. The suspension of the possession and use of weapons was also clearly reduced, which went from 54 to 25.

In the civil sphere, however, some measures increased. Alimony payments rose from 32 to 42 and suspensions of the visitation regime went from 19 to 28. The assignment of housing decreased from 22 to 19 and the suspension of parental authority fell from 36 to 30.

More convictions than acquittals in the trials held

In the judicial bodies of Girona, 200 people were tried in 2025, compared to 237 in the previous year. Of that total, 164 were convicted and 36 acquitted, which places the conviction rate at 82%.

By nationality, the conviction rate was 86.5% among Spanish defendants and 77.1% among foreigners.

Injury crimes and free dismissals increase

The statistic also records an increase in crimes of injuries and mistreatment under article 153 of the Penal Code, which went from 1,496 in 2024 to 1,553 in 2025. Crimes of injuries under articles 148 and following grew from 230 to 338.

Conversely, crimes against freedom decreased from 153 to 85. Free dismissals also increased, which went from 30 to 54 in one year.

The data published by the General Council of the Judiciary thus draw a scenario of stability in the global volume of complaints in Girona, but with relevant changes in the judicial response, in the profile of the victims and in the type of measures adopted during 2025.
