Girona will begin next week the emergency works to reinforce the lower structure of the Plaça de Catalunya. The intervention, with an estimated cost of between 300,000 and 450,000 euros, will focus on about a hundred damaged concrete beams that are part of the base of the square.
Modifications on line L6 and traffic disruptions
Starting Monday, February 23, line L6 will stop crossing Plaça de Catalunya and will circulate in front of Mercat del Lleó heading north. The new route will cross the Onyar River via the Pont de l'Areny from Carrer del Carme, continue along Carrer d'Ultònia and Plaça de Calvet i Rubalcaba, and connect with Gran Via de Jaume I, where the bus will stop in front of the Generalitat headquarters.
With this change, the L6 will stop making its usual stops on Carrer del Carme with the ascent of Pedreres and on Avinguda de Sant Francesc. In addition, the line will also be affected between February 23 and 25 by the repair work on the slope of Carrer del Carme, which slipped after the recent rains. The L6 is owned by the Generalitat de Catalunya and is operated by TEISA.
Details of the structural intervention
The reinforcement work in the square will begin on Tuesday, February 24, and will continue until June. The Plaça de Catalunya is supported by a network of 340 concrete beams, of which approximately 30% show damage and will be subject to intervention.
"The damage is irregular and you can find beams in good condition next to others with pathologies" - Sergi Font, deputy mayor and councilor for Ecological Transition and Urban Area
According to the municipal official, in several places the wear of the concrete has left the iron exposed, which has favored oxidation processes. The planned reinforcement will consist of placing laminar metal profiles on the sides and bottom of the deteriorated beams. This will redistribute the loads and reduce the structural stress on the damaged pieces.
The planning of the works will take into account the rises and falls in the flow of the Onyar River, given the proximity of the infrastructure to the riverbed.
Use of the square and upcoming municipal performances
The municipal government plans to minimize the impact on the plaza's surface and maintain its ordinary use while work is carried out on the lower structure. Traffic is not expected to be cut off, although there will be occasional use of space for storing construction materials.
"The square is safe and the work is progressing to prevent deterioration from advancing" - Sergi Font, deputy mayor and councilor for Ecological Transition and Urban Area
The City Council is studying the application of measures to pacify Plaça de Catalunya. This spring, work sessions will be organized with entities and organizations to begin defining proposals, with the intention of developing them from autumn 2026.
