The province of Girona has registered 16 fatal workplace accidents in 2025, an increase compared to the 12 of the previous year and the 14 of 2023. This increase contrasts with the decrease in the total number of workplace accidents in the Girona regions, which have gone from 12,945 in 2024 to 12,264 in 2025, according to data from the Ministry of Labor.

The majority of accidents, minor and within the workplace

Of the more than 12,000 work accidents recorded in Girona during 2025, 10,622 occurred within the workplace and 1,642 were in itinere. Medical services classified 12,264 of these incidents as "minor" and only 85 as "serious".

The rebound in mortality worries the unions. Maxi Rica, general secretary of UGT in Girona, calls for a deep review of prevention

"A paradigm shift is needed for prevention to be truly effective" - Maxi Rica, UGT Girona

Rica points out that the increase in fatal accidents is due to a lack of control over working conditions and emphasizes the seriousness of each occupational death.

The unions warn about prevention and psychosocial risks

From CCOO in Girona, Diana Estudillo points out that a significant part of fatal accidents in Catalonia have preventable causes. According to their data, 38.81% of workplace accidents in 2024 were traumatic and 45% were due to non-traumatic pathologies.

"The assessment of psychosocial risks is mandatory for all companies, and 95% do not comply" - Diana Estudillo, CCOO Girona

The gap between psychological sick leaves recognized by Social Security and those officially registered as derived from work remains significant. In 2024, 851,751 sick leave reports for psychological ailments were issued, but only 858 were directly attributed to work-related causes.

New state bill to strengthen prevention

The Second Vice President of the Spanish Government, Yolanda Díaz, has signed, together with UGT and CCOO, a bill to renew occupational risk prevention regulations. The Ministry of Labor has achieved union support, although the employers' association has distanced itself after a year and a half of negotiations. The definitive text still needs to be finalized and pass through the Council of Ministers in a first reading.

State context and autonomous comparison

In the whole of the State, 735 people died during their workday in 2025, which represents a decrease of 11.1% compared to the previous year. Andalucía topped the statistics with 121 deaths, followed by Cataluña with 119.

During the same period, the labor authority registered 1.1 million accidents among a working population of 21.8 million Social Security affiliates. Half of the accidents did not result in sick leave and nine out of ten were classified as "minor".

The number of accidents among self-employed decreased by 13.1% in 2025, while among employees the reduction was 0.6%.
