The City Council of Girona has initiated the procedures to transfer the municipal vehicle depot from MercaGirona to the Mas Xirgu industrial estate, where a new facility will be set up on an urban land plot on Indústria street.

The council has already approved the contracting to draft the executive project of the works, with a tender of 17,548.79 euros. The action foresees a maximum execution budget of 400,000 euros.

A new venue in Mas Xirgu

The future depot is projected with an office building of at least 100 square meters. The equipment will include changing rooms, kitchen, dining room and rest areas for staff working in 24-hour shifts. Armored public service spaces will also be reserved, with a window that will allow communication with users without them having to access the interior of the building.

In the parking area a minimum capacity of 164 spaces is foreseen. The distribution will be the following

  • 4 spaces for municipal cranes
  • 75 spaces for short-term parking
  • 30 spaces for abandoned vehicles or those destined for scrap
  • 25 spaces for motorcycles
  • 30 spaces for bicycles

Access to the facilities will be made by means of a remotely controlled barrier or a license plate reader. In addition, the enclosure will have a video surveillance system connected with the Municipal Police.

More capacity and better conditions

The current depot operates in MercaGirona since 2005. In these facilities there is capacity for 100 cars, 5 cranes, 40 bicycles and 40 motorcycles. With the relocation, the City Council proposes a larger space and adapted to the needs of the service.

"It is a city need that will allow dignifying the depot, will make it more accessible and will improve the working conditions of municipal staff" - Sergi Font, Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Ecological Transition

The relocation of the municipal depot is part of the desire to modernize the service and rehouse it in an industrial environment like Mas Xirgu, with better access and a configuration designed both for daily operations and for citizen service.
