Births to mothers under 20 years old in the comarcas of Girona have fallen from 137 in 2015 to 79 in 2025, a drop of 42.3% in ten years. The evolution consolidates a sustained decline in adolescent motherhood in the demarcation, in a context of general decline in births.

Within that group, births to mothers aged 15 to 19 years went from 135 to 79. In the case of those under 15 years old, births have disappeared this last year. The series maximum in Girona for mothers aged 15 to 19 years was registered in 2016, when 139 births were counted.

The fall has also accentuated in the last exercise. Girona closed 2025 with 79 births of adolescent mothers, below the 97 of 2024, which supposes 18 fewer cases and a decrease of 18.6% in just one year.

Fewer births in almost all age groups

The decrease in births among adolescent mothers is part of a broader contraction. The total number of births in Girona went from 7,540 in 2015 to 5,745 in 2025, with a reduction of 1,795 and 23.8%.

In 2025, the largest group was that of mothers aged 30 to 34, with 2,008 births. Next were mothers aged 35 to 39, with 1,482, and those aged 25 to 29, with 1,206.

Other age groups also declined. Births to mothers aged 20 to 24 decreased from 666 in 2015 to 503 in 2025, 24.5% less. In the 25 to 29 age group, the drop was from 1,703 to 1,206, almost 29.2%. Among mothers aged 35 to 39, the decrease was from 1,987 to 1,482.

More weight of motherhood from the age of 30

Although the absolute number of births decreases, the weight of older mothers gains ground within the total. In 2015, mothers aged 30 or more accounted for 66.8% of births in Girona and in 2025 they represented 68.9%.

In the group of 40 to 44 years, it went from 443 births in 2015 to 409 in 2025. Despite that slight decrease in absolute figures, its weight on the total increased from 5.9% to 7.1%. If the groups of 45 to 49 years and 50 or more are also added, mothers aged 40 or more went from 6.3% to 8.1% of the total births in the last decade.

The context in Spain follows the same trend

The evolution of Girona fits with that registered in the whole of the State. In Spain there were 318,005 births in 2024, 0.8% less than the previous year. Since 2014, the figure has decreased by 25.6%.

Adolescent motherhood also decreases. In 2024, 5,422 babies were born to mothers under 20 years old, compared to 8,613 in 2014, which represents a decrease of 37%. In the case of those under 15 years old, births decreased from 136 to 76 in that same period. The weight of the total of adolescent mothers decreased from 2.01% to 1.7% of the total births, while the average age at motherhood stood at 32.6 years.

Voluntary interruptions of pregnancy marked a recent high

In parallel, Girona registered in 2024 the highest number of voluntary terminations of pregnancy since 2012, with 2,108 cases. More than a tenth of the women who voluntarily terminated the pregnancy were under 19 years old.

The group with the most voluntary interruptions continued to be that of 20 to 24 years old, just like a decade ago. Even so, in 2024 the number of girls aged 15 to 19 who opted for this decision decreased compared to the data from ten years ago. The sum of these indicators draws in Girona a scenario of fewer births, less adolescent motherhood, and a progressive delay in the age of becoming a mother.
