The Girona council held a new meeting of the working group for the language this week with the aim of strengthening institutional and social coordination in favor of Catalan. This session marked a turning point in the dynamics of the space by incorporating municipal groups for the first time alongside the entities that were already part of it. The debate focused on reviewing the work carried out during 2025 and beginning to define the lines of action planned for the next academic year. The deputy mayor and councilor for Catalan Language, Núria Riquelme, presided over the meeting with the intention of consolidating this space for dialogue as a key vehicle for social cohesion.

Riquelme has intervened in the session to underline the strategic importance of the language.

"Catalan is part of Girona's identity and is key to social cohesion"

has affirmed the deputy mayor. Faced with this scenario, she has acknowledged that the challenges are demanding and has defended the need to have more tools to promote concrete and measurable projects that reinforce the daily use of Catalan. To support this vision, thememory of the Catalan Language Service of 2025, on the main actions deployed to promote the language in different areas of the city are detailed. Below, the activities planned for 2026 are presented, open to contributions from the agents involved.

Expansion of participation and definition of future lines

Municipal participation has added a layer of political representation to the debate. The groups Guanyem Girona, Junts per Girona, and the PSC have been able to present their perspectives within a broad framework of collaboration. The entities present have also had the floor to share proposals, needs, and work priorities. The list of organizations convened reflects the breadth of the Girona associative fabric committed to the language.

  • Commission for the Defense of the Catalan Language of the ICAG
  • El Foment
  • Fundació Les Voltes

These agents have been able to contrast official data with street reality and have provided their vision on the obstacles detected. Both entities and municipal groups have presented their initiatives during the meeting, thus enriching the future plan. The closing of the session included an open forum where reflections on the current situation of Catalan in the city were shared. There is general agreement on the need to continue promoting coordinated actions to guarantee the vitality of the language. With this second meeting, the working group is consolidated as a stable space for collaboration between the City Council and the associative fabric. The hope is that this structure will allow intentions to be translated into tangible results for all the residents of Girona.
