The City Council of Girona has allocated in 2024 a total of 13.963.042,69 euros to social services and social promotion. The figure represents a reduction compared to the previous year, when the investment reached 14.433.181,97 euros.
Decrease in investment and in the average per inhabitant
The average investment per inhabitant in Girona during 2024 stands at 130.46 euros. In 2023, the average was 138.35 euros per person. The decrease represents 5.7% less in the average per inhabitant and a global decrease of 3.2% in total investment compared to the previous year.
According to data from the Asociación Estatal de Directores y Gerentes Sociales, Girona ranks 19th among provincial capitals in investment in social services and social promotion. In 2023, the city was in 16th place.
Comparison with other cities and state averages
The state average investment in social services per inhabitant in 2024 is 106.48 euros. In the case of provincial capitals, the average rises to 156.14 euros per inhabitant. Girona is the third city in Catalonia in investment in social services and economic promotion, only behind Barcelona, with 288.07 euros, and Lleida, with 131.66 euros.
The Catalan average stands at 171.53 euros per inhabitant. Tarragona allocates 107.55 euros on average per inhabitant to social services.
Municipalities with least and most investment
To be considered a poor municipality in social services investment, the figure must be less than 60% of the annual state average per inhabitant, that is, less than 63.80 euros. In 2024, 45 Spanish municipalities invest less than 63.89 euros per inhabitant in social services and social promotion. Among them are Teruel, with 60.72 euros, and Badajoz, with 58.44 euros.
In 2023, Roses (Girona) invested 56.51 euros per inhabitant in social services and economic promotion, but in 2024 it no longer appears in the list of municipalities considered poor.
Recognitions and situation of Girona
In 2024, 27 city councils have exceeded the average of 200 euros per inhabitant in investment in social services and have been recognized as "excellent". The previous year, 21 city councils had that distinction. To obtain this recognition, the Asociación Estatal de Directores y Gerentes Sociales requires accrediting a liquidated expenditure in social services exceeding 200 euros per inhabitant or that the budget has not decreased compared to the previous year.
Girona does not meet the criteria to be considered an "excellent" municipality in social services investment. Only two provincial capitals have reached the "excellent" rating in 2024 Barcelona, with 288.07 euros per inhabitant, and Bilbao, with 208.94 euros.
The five municipalities with the highest investment per inhabitant in social services in 2024 are Isla Cristina, with 434.13 euros, Alcalá la Real, with 427.51 euros, San Roque, with 403.63 euros, Baza, with 346.99 euros, and Morón de la Frontera and Ayamonte, both with 288.57 euros.
