The hotels in the province of Girona closed March 2026 with 261,448 travelers and 542,200 overnight stays, the best historical series data for this month since 1999. The figure surpasses the previous March maximum, which had been reached in 2018 with 258,312 travelers.

The year-on-year increase was also relevant. Girona added 41,120 more travelers than in March 2025, which represents an increase of 18.6%. In overnight stays, the rise was 66,514 nights, 14% more than a year ago.

International tourism drives growth

A good part of the advance is explained by the arrival of foreign visitors. In March, the Gerundense hotels hosted 131,981 residents abroad, 34.4% more than in the same month last year. This group also generated 289,577 overnight stays, with an increase of 23.8%.

The domestic market also grew, although at a more moderate pace. Residents in Spain were 129,467, 6% more, and made 252,622 overnight stays, with a rebound of 4.5%.

Cataluña also marks maximums in March

In Catalonia as a whole, March left 1,563,358 travelers in hotels, 12.6% more than a year earlier and a new record for this month. Within that volume, international travelers reached 945,083 and surpassed for the first time the 900,000 barrier in March.

Residents in Spain who stayed in Catalan hotels were 618,275, the third highest figure in the last 25 years. In the accumulated first quarter of 2026, Catalan hotel establishments registered 3.98 million visitors.

The number of nights per traveler in Catalonia stood at 2.24, which points to shorter average stays despite the increase in client volume.

Barcelona concentrates the largest volume of guests

By demarcations, Barcelona once again concentrated the bulk of the activity with 1.8 million travelers during March. Girona stood out as one of the territories with the best performance of the month by signing its best historical record for this period.

Lleida recorded 81,923 people staying in hotels during March, while Tarragona reached 139,976 guests, its second highest figure in the historical series for this month.

With these data, Girona starts 2026 with a strong hotel boost, supported above all by international demand and with a March that breaks the statistical ceiling of the last decades in the province.
