The province of Girona registered 20,724 healthcare assistances for traffic accidents in 2025, a figure that places it as the second Catalan demarcation with the most assistances of this type, only behind Barcelona. The average is equivalent to one assistance every 25 minutes and 22 seconds, within an assistance volume that reflects the weight of road accidents in the Girona healthcare network.
The data correspond to the annual statistics on medical assistance covered by insurers through health agreements. In Catalonia as a whole, the distribution of assistance was concentrated in Barcelona with 155,141 cases, followed by Girona with 20,724, Tarragona with 10,412 and Lleida with 5,549.
Girona remains behind Barcelona
Girona's position within Catalonia places it ahead of Tarragona and Lleida in the number of assistance files linked to traffic accidents. This volume consolidates it as the second Catalan province with the most activity in this area, in a community where Barcelona concentrates most of the attentions.
In Spain as a whole, insurers allocated 431 million euros to this coverage during 2025 and processed 1.03 million claims. Girona concentrated 1.8% of the state expenditure associated with this healthcare assistance.
Greater weight of private healthcare in the province
One of the most notable features in Girona is the destination of healthcare payments derived from these accidents. 72.3% was channeled towards private centers, while 27.7% went to the public network. This is a percentage of referral to private healthcare higher than that recorded in the rest of the Catalan provinces.
- Barcelona registered 67.8% of payments to private centers
- Tarragona reached 53.1%
- Lleida stood at 40%
The difference places Girona as the Catalan province where the weight of private centers was higher within this health coverage linked to road accidents.
Drivers and occupants concentrate the majority of assistance
The state distribution by type of victim shows that drivers accounted for 59.2% of the assistance processed in 2025. Occupants represented 29.3% and pedestrians the remaining 11.5%.
By type of vehicle, the automobile concentrated the vast majority of cases attended. 85.1% of the victims in Spain were traveling by car, compared to 3.4% who were doing so by motorcycle.
Another of the relevant variables is the economic impact of hospital admissions. Although hospital stays only accounted for 2% of the records, they absorbed 28% of the payments made throughout Spain, which evidences their high cost within the healthcare compensation system.
May was the month with the most activity
The annual series also leaves a clear peak in the calendar. May was the month with the highest number of assistances due to traffic accidents in Spain during 2025, within a year in which Girona maintained a constant and high frequency of attention. The figure of more than twenty thousand assistances in the province confirms the pressure that road accidents continue to generate on concerted healthcare resources and on the assistance network of the territory.
