The Association for the Development of Railways and Public Transport in the Girona Regions was formally constituted on Friday, February 27, after a hybrid assembly held simultaneously in four venues of the Girona demarcation. The event featured the in-person participation of about 25 people, distributed among the different locations, and the remote connection of more than 50 attendees.
First board of directors and immediate objectives
During the assembly, the statutes were approved and the first board of directors was elected. Xavi Baena will assume the presidency and Agustí Palà will occupy the vice-presidency of the new entity. The promoters highlighted the will to coordinate efforts and add strength to defend the pending railway projects in the demarcation.
Priorities in the Costa Brava and the interior
The new association sets as a priority the development of the Costa Brava Train-Tram. In addition, the Girona–Banyoles–Olot corridor is among the main axes of action, along with the Lloret–Blanes project, which will be addressed in a later phase.
Claim to the Generalitat and diagnosis of the territory
The entity has expressed its intention to pressure the Generalitat for the project to advance beyond the study and materialize with effective steps. The association maintains that the Girona regions suffer from a public transport deficit and considers that the territory is abandoned in this area.
"Girona is one of the provinces with the highest density of vehicles per inhabitant, which reinforces the need to have more competitive rail and collective mobility alternatives" - Board of Directors, Association for the Development of Railways and Public Transport in the Girona Regions
The constitution of the association marks a new step in the coordination of entities and people who demand improvements in the public transport network of the regions of Girona. The objective is for the pending railway projects to stop being only on paper and start to be executed for the benefit of collective mobility.
