The Mossos d"Esquadra of the Girona Regional Traffic Area made 365 arrests during 2025 for crimes linked to road safety. The most common reason was driving under the influence of alcohol, which accounted for 123 arrests in the demarcation.

The number of arrests for alcohol decreased compared to the previous year. In 2024, 140 were recorded, so the year-on-year decrease was 12.1%. Even so, this continues to be the main focus of police action on Girona roads.

Alcohol remains at the forefront of road crimes

Along with arrests for drunk driving, agents carried out 40 arrests for refusing to undergo detection tests. Also, 10 arrests were recorded in cases where alcohol and drugs were combined, a figure that rises by 42% compared to 2024.

That increase contrasts with the fall in arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol exclusively. The balance thus leaves an uneven evolution within the crimes related to the consumption of substances while driving.

Cases of driving without a permit decrease

The second large block of arrests in Girona during 2025 was that of drivers who were circulating without ever having obtained a license. The Mossos carried out 86 arrests for this reason, below the 100 registered in 2024.

The reduction confirms a decrease in this type of behavior, although the figure continues to be relevant within the set of crimes against road safety detected by the Regional Traffic Area.

Reckless driving and hit-and-runs after accident rise

Where a rebound is indeed seen is in reckless driving. In 2025, it went from 71 to 80 arrests, which represents an increase of 12.7%. Arrests for abandoning the scene of the accident also grew, rising from 1 to 4.

The annual balance on Girona's roads thus reflects a decrease in some of the most frequent offenses, such as drunk driving or driving without a license, and at the same time an increase in particularly risky behaviors, such as reckless driving or fleeing after an accident.
