The province of Girona has registered a new historical milestone in its labor market by adding 11,712 jobs during the month of April. This positive dynamic raises the number of affiliates to Social Security to 379,443, which represents an increase of 3.18% compared to the previous month.

This is the highest level reached for a month of April since comparable records have existed in 2012. Economic dynamism is also reflected in hiring, as companies signed 23,636 contracts in the Girona regions over these four weeks.

The services sector drives the recovery

The reduction in unemployment was not homogeneous among the different productive sectors. The tertiary sector acted as the main engine of change, as 860 out of every thousand people who left the unemployment lists did so thanks to this area.

Construction contributed with a decrease of 57 unemployed, while industry reduced the figure by 50 people and agriculture by 18. This data confirms the preeminence of tourism and commerce in the generation of seasonal employment in the area.

"The closure of April registered 26,815 unemployed people in the regions of Girona" - Ministry of Labor

The month-on-month decrease in unemployment reached 3.78%, which translates to 1,052 fewer people registered in the employment offices. If we compare these results with April of last year, the negative trend for the worker continues, as there are 1,731 fewer unemployed people, a year-on-year decrease of 6.06%.

Gender inequality in the numbers

Despite the general improvement, the data reveal structural gaps that persist in the local labor fabric. Women continue to be overrepresented in unemployment statistics, as they constitute 57.38% of the total.

This means that 15,388 women are actively seeking employment in the province. For their part, the youth collective shows more contained figures, with 1,859 individuals under 25 years of age registered on the employment demand lists.

The breakdown by sectors shows that services concentrates the largest pool of unemployed with 18,793 people. Industry follows with 3,061 unemployed, indicating where the greatest difficulties for immediate re-employment lie.

"Of the contracts signed, 11,560 were permanent" - Hiring data

Labor stability took a step forward with the formalization of 11,560 permanent contracts during the month. This figure represents almost half of all contractual activity registered, suggesting a certain consolidation of workforces beyond seasonal temporality.

In the Catalan context, Girona leads the relative drop in unemployment compared to other demarcations. While Tarragona fell by 3.82%, Barcelona did so by 2.50% and Lleida by 2.62%, which places the province of Girona in a position of relative strength within the autonomous community.

Affiliates increased by 7,396 compared to twelve months ago, a growth of 1.99% that consolidates the post-pandemic recovery in the territory. The combination of high affiliation and a decrease in unemployment paints a scenario of intense economic reactivation during the spring.
