The Servei Català de Trànsit has launched since this Monday, April 20, an intensive control campaign in the regions of Girona to monitor the use of seat belts, helmets, and child restraint systems. The operation will last until Sunday, April 26, and has the collaboration of the Mossos d'Esquadra and local police forces.

Surveillance focuses on passive safety elements, that is, those that reduce the consequences of an accident once it occurs. Among them are the seatbelt, the helmet, and child seats, whose correct use will be subject to inspection throughout the week.

First specific campaign of the year

The action activated in Girona is the first of the two specific campaigns on passive safety planned this year. It is also part of a broader package of 21 preventive police operations programmed for this year.

Trànsit reminds that not carrying these devices, or using them improperly, entails a fine of 200 euros and the withdrawal of 4 points from the driving license. The obligation also affects coach passengers, who must wear the seatbelt when the vehicle has one.

More than 1,400 complaints in the last equivalent campaign

The most recent precedent leaves a high number of infractions. In the equivalent campaign carried out in April 2025, 1,448 complaints were filed in Catalonia. The vast majority were related to the seat belt.

  • 1,236 complaints, 85.4% of the total, for not using the seat belt
  • 92 penalties for not wearing a helmet
  • 120 penalties for irregularities in child restraint systems

With this new device, Trànsit seeks to reinforce the compliance of basic protection measures on the road and in urban areas, with controls distributed throughout the week in different points of the Gerundense regions.
