The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has awarded the works to restore Plaza España in Girona. This intervention mobilizes an investment close to 3 million euros with the objective of recovering an urban space degraded by railway infrastructure.

The action focuses on land that Adif AV occupies for the Madrid-Barcelona-French border high-speed line. The agreement also includes Adif land located in Plaza de España and Plaza del Poeta Marquina. The total affected area exceeds 11,000 square meters.

The pedestrian connection unites the square with Europe

The project seeks to integrate an area fragmented by the train works and the old bus station. The final design will create a fluid pedestrian interconnection space. This corridor will facilitate access to the city's main transport hubs.

The green areas will connect directly with the Europa Square area. This union aims to improve soft mobility between two nerve centers of the Girona urban fabric. The recovery of the land allows for the elimination of historical architectural barriers.

Pere Parramon, government subdelegate in Girona, valued the resolution of the administrative file. He highlighted the continuity of state policies in the Girona capital during the last legislature.

"We are facing the solution of a case that comes after years of constant work and that is a reflection of the political will of the government of Pedro Sánchez. It is gratifying to know that the current sub-delegation represents the government that has invested the most in Girona." - Pere Parramon, government sub-delegate in Girona

Demolitions and relocations modify public roads

The technical works imply a profound transformation of the current physiognomy of the environment. The planned actions include protection measures for existing plant species. Selective felling and transplanting of trees will also be carried out to adapt the vegetation to the new design.

The bus stop will change location to free up pedestrian space. Workers will demolish existing stairs, ramps, and sidewalks. All current asphalt pavement will be removed, including the access to the parking lot from Creu street.

The renovation of public lighting includes the installation of new poles and streetlights. In addition, the city council will install equipment belonging to the municipal Girocleta service. These improvements will equip the square with modern and sustainable services.
