Celrà, Fornells de la Selva, Bescanó, Quart and Sant Gregori have agreed to jointly promote the development of official protection housing in their municipalities. The initiative seeks to respond to the demand for affordable housing in the Girona area and facilitate access to rental through the transfer of municipal land.

Cession of land and supramunicipal coordination

The president of the Consell Comarcal del Gironès and mayor of Fornells de la Selva, Sònia Gràcia, has explained that the transfer of land by the five implicated city councils will soon be approved in the plenary session of the supramunicipal entity. The objective is for the council to manage the bidding bases in different lots to streamline the process.

"The council already moved to increase housing in those municipalities that have available land and that cannot develop it alone" - Sònia Gràcia, president of the Consell Comarcal del Gironès

Gràcia has added that the city councils will cede land for rental housing, which will allow increasing the supply of HPO in the region. Cassà de la Selva could join the initiative at a later stage.

Synergies in the Girona environment

The mayor of Celrà, David Planas, has highlighted the importance of collaboration between municipalities in the Girona area to address common problems such as mobility, security, and access to housing. Planas has stressed that all municipalities in the area depend on Girona for many services and that the pooling of resources is key to moving forward.

"All the surrounding municipalities depend on Girona and it is positive that there are synergies and shared services. We all have the same problems mobility, security and housing" - David Planas, mayor of Celrà

Improvements in mobility and urban planning in Celrà

In parallel to the housing initiative, Celrà is advancing in mobility and urban planning projects. The Generalitat is about to finalize the bike lane that will connect Celrà with Girona through Campdorà, an infrastructure that will facilitate sustainable travel between both municipalities.

The Celrà Town Council has signed an agreement with the Generalitat to exchange ownership of two main roads. Carrer del Ter will pass into the hands of the autonomous government, while the C-66 in the urban core will be municipal property.

David Planas has remarked that with the future Celrà bypass, financed with 8.1 million euros, between 10,000 and 12,000 vehicles will stop passing through the town center. This action aims to reduce traffic and improve the quality of life in the urban core.
