Eight out of ten people accused of gender violence in the regions of Girona end up being convicted, according to the latest data from the General Council of the Judiciary corresponding to the courts of violence against women. In the first nine months of 2025, the province's courts have prosecuted 157 people, with a total of 126 convictions and 31 acquittals.

The percentage of convictions in Girona remains below the Catalan average

The average conviction rate in Girona during this period stands at 80.3%. This percentage is notably lower than that recorded in Catalonia as a whole, where the average in the third quarter of 2025 reached 93.4%, and even further from the state average, which was 94.6%. In the third quarter of 2025, Girona ranked 46th out of 50 in the state ranking of convictions for gender violence. Only Ourense, Salamanca, Ávila, and Seville presented lower rates in that period.

The quarterly analysis shows variations in the province. In the first quarter of 2025, the conviction rate was 78.6%, with 44 convictions out of 56 people prosecuted. In the second quarter, it dropped to 75.6% (34 out of 45). However, in the third quarter there was a rebound to 85.7%, with 48 people convicted.

State comparison and evolution of the complaints

Across Spain, judicial bodies issued 13,440 sentences for gender violence in the third quarter of 2025. Of these, 11,376 were convictions, representing 84.64%, and 2,064 were acquittals. The highest percentage of convictions was recorded in courts specializing in violence against women, with 94.53%. Regarding provinces, Cantabria reached 99.2% of convictions and Almería 98.2%. In absolute terms, Valencia stood out with 579 convicted individuals in the quarter, followed by Murcia (502) and Alicante (485).

In Girona, the number of women victims of sexist violence in the third quarter of 2025 was 697, which represents a decrease of 12.6% compared to the same period of the previous year, when 798 were recorded. The number of Spanish victims remains at 319 cases, while that of foreign victims drops by 6.2%, from 403 to 378.

Decrease in complaints and changes in the typology of police actions

During the third quarter of 2025, 734 complaints for gender violence were filed in Girona, 17.9% less than the previous year. Complaints processed from police reports by direct initiative of the victim decreased by 21.2%, going from 678 to 534. On the contrary, ex officio police actions increased from 61 to 91 cases in the same period. Complaints filed by family members also increased.

Another relevant fact is the increase in the number of women who choose not to testify against the alleged aggressor. In the third quarter of 2025, 98 women decided not to testify, which represents an increase of 18.1% compared to the 83 from the previous year.
