Barda Petarda, artistic name of Gerard Fulcarà Nadal, a resident of Llançà born in 1994, will be the first Catalan to compete in the reality show 'Regias del Drag España'. The third edition of the program will premiere on April 5 and can be followed through the format's YouTube channel.
The artist arrives at this new edition after having recently won 'Queens of Virtual Drag', the digital version of the contest. That triumph made her the first winner of that format and also the first Catalan to manage to impose herself within this franchise.
A representative of Llançà in a state competition
In this third edition, nine artists from different parts of the State will compete over seven episodes. The program has been created and produced by the drag queen Nina Vagina and is part of an independent project promoted by the cultural association CuidadoQueTeVeo.
Barda Petarda has advocated on several occasions the value of representing Catalonia from outside the large urban centers. One of the features of her work is precisely to bring drag to the street and create a show designed for all audiences.
"An opportunity to demonstrate that LGBTQ art is also born and grows outside of the great capitals" - Barda Petarda
A visible drag and intended for all audiences
The artist defends a proposal far from the exclusive association between drag, nightlife and adult spaces. In her case, she opts for a daytime and visible format, with the will to become a reference for LGBTQ youth.
"Society associates drag artists with the nightlife and adult world, but there are also artists who perform outside these spheres. That's why I decided my drag would be daytime and visible, to be a role model for LGBTQ youth" - Barda Petarda
She has also highlighted the symbolic weight of her participation in this state edition. She will be the first Catalan contestant in the history of the program, a condition that she assumes as a central part of her candidacy.
"I have the honor of being the first Catalan contestant on the show, so I want to represent my land and demonstrate that drag is also art, culture, and freedom, and that it can be for the whole family" - Barda Petarda
A format with a run on YouTube and networks
'Queens of Drag Spain' has the support and sponsorship of the Provincial Council of Cáceres. Since its premiere on YouTube in 2022, the program has accumulated more than 500,000 views on the platform and also adds millions of reproductions on its social networks.
The project addresses social issues such as diversity, identity, mental health, school bullying, queer love, and LGBTQ childhoods. With the incorporation of Barda Petarda into the cast of contestants, Llançà and the Catalan drag scene will have a presence for the first time in a format that has been gaining reach edition after edition.
