The Girona Bar Association processed 44,975 official duty cases in 2025, an 8.8% increase from the 41,344 registered in 2024. The service thus continues another year of growth and reaches its highest volume in the last four fiscal years.
The increase was not uniform. While activity in criminal, civil, family, labor, and administrative contentious judicial proceedings remained stable, attention to victims of gender-based violence once again soared to a new high, and assistance to detained persons accounted for almost half of all work.
Assistance to victims of gender-based violence increased by 25% in one year
Assistance related to gender-based violence reached 6,226 cases in 2025. This figure represents a 25% increase from 2024 and clearly widens the gap compared to 2022, when the association registered 1,839 interventions of this type.
Within the overall official duty service, this increase coexists with a more stable base of activity in the courts. Cases in criminal, civil, family, labor, and administrative contentious judicial proceedings stood at 17,143 during 2025, at levels similar to the previous year.
In this block, criminal law maintained the highest volume with 12,685 cases. The figure was practically the same as in 2024.
Assistance to detainees accounted for 21,606 cases in 2025
Assistance to detained persons was the area with the most weight in Girona during 2025. The association recorded 21,606 cases, a 14% increase from the previous year, in a category that accounted for almost half of the annual total.
The cumulative trend shows a change in scale over four years. The official duty service went from 28,359 cases in 2022 to 33,401 in 2023, then rose to 41,344 in 2024, and closed 2025 with 44,975 cases, a 59% increase from 2022.
The free legal aid service covers the assistance and legal defense of those who request an official lawyer, both in attending to detainees and in intervening in various judicial proceedings. In 2025, assistance to victims of gender-based violence reached 6,226 cases, the highest figure in the entire series provided.
