A homeless man remains in critical condition at Josep Trueta hospital after being assaulted this Sunday morning on the d'Olot promenade in Girona, in the vicinity of Bastiments street.
Immediate arrest after the assault
The aggression occurred at eight in the morning. According to eyewitnesses, the alleged aggressor, a 26-year-old man, pursued the victim and made her fall to the ground. At that moment, the attacker savagely attacked him, jumping on him and giving him several kicks. The Mossos d'Esquadra arrived at the scene when the aggressor was still there.
Police sources have confirmed that the suspect has attempted to flee and has also tried to assault the officers. Finally, the man has been arrested accused of the assault and of assault on authority.
The victim, a person known in the neighborhood
Residents of the Can Gibert del Pla neighborhood have identified the victim as a man habitual in the area. He usually walks through the neighborhood with a cart where he transports his belongings and receives food from some residents. According to the same sources, he used to sleep in a covered area of Isabel Vilà i Pujol square.
Mossos agents have collected evidence at the scene and have taken the belongings of the injured person for their custody.
Social attention and institutional reaction
The City Council of Girona has reported that the victim had been visited on several occasions by social entities and professionals from the municipal services. She had been offered housing alternatives, although she had rejected them.
