Adif will begin the comprehensive renovation of Girona's Plaça d'Espanya before summer, a project costing 2.96 million euros that will completely change traffic circulation and the uses of the area around the station. The work, awarded to Construcciones Rubau SL, will reorganize access, move taxi stands, and add a new bike lane, seating areas, and trees.
The most visible change will affect traffic in one of the city's busiest entry and exit points. The project eliminates the lane that currently allows turning from Carrer Barcelona towards the station, while moving vehicle access to Carrer de la Creu via Pierre Vilar, which will also have its direction of circulation reversed.
Adif eliminates the turn from Carrer Barcelona towards the station
The road reorganization concentrates a large part of the renovation. Vehicles will no longer be able to enter the station with the current turn from Carrer Barcelona and will have to do so from Carrer de la Creu, after the change of direction planned for Carrer Pierre Vilar.
Taxi stands and short-stay parking areas will also be moved to Pierre Vilar. In parallel, Adif will open a new lane perpendicular to the station as an extension of Carrer Bisbe Lorenzana, with a connection to Carrer Barcelona and reserved for emergencies and loading and unloading.
At the far end of Carrer Bailèn, the work will calm traffic with an elevated platform. Upon reaching the station area, vehicles will have to turn towards Carrer de Ferràn Soldevila i Zubiburu.
The square will incorporate a bike lane, trees, and new seating areas
The renovation is not limited to traffic. The project plans to relocate the Girocleta station, install a children's playground, place benches, and plant trees in a square that will gain new uses next to the railway access.
In addition, a bike lane will be built that will connect to the existing one on Carrer de Ferràn Soldevila i Zubiburu. This route will pass in front of the station and link to the Parc Central via Carrer de la Creu.
The redesign of the space also includes the relocation of the sculpture Monument a la Vellesa. The City Council is also studying whether to re-site the locomotive from the Sant Feliu de Guíxols tourist train in the square or to finally install it in the Parc Central.
The works will start imminently and could coincide with another relevant change in the same area, the construction of a hotel on the esplanade of the old bus station promoted by the Girona company Homs.
