A worker was seriously injured on Tuesday afternoon after falling from about four meters while repairing one of the bridges over the Güell River, in Girona. The accident occurred around three o'clock, at number 150 Riu Güell street, in the vicinity of the bridge located in front of Balandrau street.
The initial hypothesis points to a wooden plank giving way during the work and the employee, who was wearing a harness and safety helmet, fell headfirst. The incident occurred on a repair site already underway and affects a structure that remains pending intervention, even though another walkway in the same area, the one in Bastiments, finished its work a few days ago.
The Firefighters rescued the worker with a ladder truck
Crews from the Mossos d'Esquadra, the SEM, the Bombers de la Generalitat, and the Policia Municipal de Girona moved to the location. Local officers regulated traffic in the area while the emergency was being attended to.
During the intervention, the Bombers de la Generalitat used a ladder truck to access the point of the fall and evacuate the injured person. Afterwards, the SEM transferred the operator to the Josep Trueta Hospital.
The accident occurred during the development of the works on the Güell river walkways, an action that the City Council awarded to Rehabilitacions Pons SL. The contract amounts to 164,345.95 euros and the works began at the end of January.
The walkway in front of Balandrau remains under construction to repair the structure
The fall took place on the walkway located in front of Balandrau street, where work continues to repair the structure. At that point, the first hypothesis places the origin of the accident in the breaking of a wooden plank on which the operator was working.
In parallel, the intervention on the Bastiments footbridge ended a few days ago. The work on the set of footbridges of the Güell river, however, maintains the schedule set to finish before summer.
The repair work on the Güell River footbridges began at the end of January and its completion is scheduled before summer.
