A 73-year-old diver of French nationality died this Wednesday at noon during a dive in the Sarnella area, in El Port de la Selva. The emergency alert came in a few minutes after 12 noon, when the companion with whom he was carrying out the activity alerted that the man had felt unwell in the water.
The victim was participating in the dive along with three other people. During the activity, he/she began to suffer dizziness and, when he/she was taken out of the water, had already lost consciousness. Municipal sources indicate that he/she would have suffered cardiorespiratory arrest.
Deployment of emergencies in the Sarnella area
To the scene of the incident, personnel from the Mossos d'Esquadra, Civil Protection, the Municipal Guard, and a SEM helicopter were dispatched. Medical services tried to revive the diver, although finally they could not save his life.
The deceased was performing the dive accompanied by three other people, in an usual area for this type of activity on the Alt Empordà coast. The intervention focused on the Sarnella area, where both terrestrial and aerial resources were mobilized.
The Civil Guard investigates the circumstances
The case has remained under investigation by the Civil Guard. In the operation, GEAS, the Special Group for Underwater Activities, also intervened, which was in charge of analyzing the circumstances of the event.
The investigation must clarify what happened during the dive, after the diver began to feel unwell and ended up losing consciousness before being able to be attended to on land.
