Palamós will reopen this Friday to pedestrian traffic the promenade del Mar after a comprehensive renovation that has lasted more than a year and that will leave the space completely accessible. The City Council has postponed the celebration events planned for the same day due to the forecast of strong wind, although the opening of the renovated area is maintained.

The action has focused on the section between Aragón and Carmel streets and has also included the vehicle circulation lane parallel to the promenade. The project, drafted by the municipal technical services, also incorporates the conclusions of the citizen participation process developed between 2022 and 2023.

More space for pedestrians and new connection with the urban environment

The reform has maintained already existing elements of the promenade, such as the central sauló surface, the arcades and parts of the wall that separates it from Gran beach. At the same time, the intervention expands the pedestrian areas and creates inverted priority spaces with the aim of improving the connection with the streets that link this coastal front with the urban fabric.

The project almost completely renews the existing urbanization and services in this sector of the promenade. Among the improvements also included is the implementation of a bike lane along the entire route.

Two underground tanks to manage rainwater

One of the main focuses of the work has been the incorporation of a water management system with collection and utilization, along with a separate sewage network. Under the promenade's pavement, two underground tanks have been installed at a depth of 5 meters, made of polyester reinforced with fiberglass.

The combined capacity of both reservoirs is 920 cubic meters. The first, intended for the retention of rainwater, can store 620 cubic meters. The second, designed to collect water for irrigation, has a capacity of 300 cubic meters.

These tanks will collect part of the rainwater coming from the Eixample area that ends up reaching the beach. The dirtiest water retained in the first tank will then be pumped to the treatment plant for its recycling and discharge into the sea. The cleanest that enters the second will be reused for drip irrigation of the green areas of the promenade and, later, of other nearby spaces.

New lighting, charging points and street furniture

The reform incorporates 16 charging spaces for electric cars and 10 charging spaces for electric bicycles and personal mobility vehicles. The lighting in the area of intervention has also been completely renovated with LED luminaires and a remote management system.

The promenade also gains children's playgrounds, public toilets, new benches, litter bins, bollards, water dispensers, and bicycle racks. Regarding vegetation, the flowerbeds incorporate screening and shrub vegetation, while the linear arrangement of the trees is maintained.

The cost of the works and improvements to the promenade of the Sea amounts to 6,607,857 euros. Of this amount, 3 million come from Next Generation funds of the European Union destined for sustainable tourism actions. The City Council plans to soon schedule the opening events that have been postponed due to the wind episode.
