Girona City Council has started distributing new keychains to open smart containers and temporary waste areas, a measure that was launched this Monday, March 23, in full deployment of the new collection model. On the first day of service, about 200 devices were delivered.

The keychain fulfills the same function as the identification card linked to each home. In addition to allowing the opening of containers and temporary areas, it also serves to use the fixed and mobile clean point service.

A keychain per dwelling and activation in 24 hours

The council delivers a keyring per dwelling. To collect it, it is necessary to present one of the electronic cards associated with the address. If the user does not have that card or cannot show it at that moment, they can prove residency with official documentation, such as the DNI with the updated address, a certificate of registration, or a copy of the rental contract.

As with the cards, the key fob does not become operative until 24 hours after its activation. Collection can be made at any of the four Waste Management Support Offices in Girona and also at the mobile recycling centers, within the usual operating hours of each service.

Measure linked to the deployment of the new system

The distribution of these devices coincides with the implementation of the new model of smart containers, which began in January. The system allows residents of the neighborhoods where it is already in operation to deposit all fractions every day and at any time with the identification card. According to municipal data, 91% of Girona's population already has a waste card.

More containers in points with greater contribution

In parallel, the City Council has begun to reinforce some areas of smart containers with more units for the paper and packaging fractions. The action has been applied in the points where a greater contribution of waste has been detected.

The council reminds that these identifications are linked to the dwelling and not to the person. In case of loss of the card, the cancellation must be processed. If the address changes, neither the cards nor the key fobs should be moved to the new home. To update data, report a loss or manage a cancellation, citizens can go to the Waste Management Support Offices or to the mobile clean points.
