Girona Est has focused this week on the lack of physical activity among its young people after surveys conducted in the neighborhood's schools during the first semester of the school year indicate that 71% of students aged 12 to 15 do not practice any sport or physical activity.
The data contrasts with another result from the same survey. In childhood, there is an interest in sports, but that interest clashes with difficulties of access, while in adulthood it grows again, linked above all to informal activities such as walking.
The initiative is part of the Girona Est Health Week, promoted by the Health Table within the Fem Salut project. The program runs until Friday, May 22, and aims to pave the way for a broader and more continuous proposal next school year to curb the abandonment of exercise.
Health Week Seeks to Reverse the Fact That 71% of Teenagers Do Not Exercise
Activities are spread throughout the week in different neighborhood facilities. The program includes family outings from the Escola Bressol Cavall Fort, gentle gymnastics sessions, and open days at both the Onyar Civic Center and the Girona Est sports school.
In addition to the diagnosis among adolescents, the surveys point to a difference by age. Among the youngest, there is a predisposition towards sports practice, but obstacles to accessing it persist.
In contrast, in the adult population, interest increases when the proposal is not about regulated sports, but about more everyday formulas such as walking. This cross-referencing of data has guided a program with family-friendly, open activities spread across various points in the neighborhood.
Onyar Civic Center Hosts Walks, Petanque, and a Bachata Class
On Wednesday, the program includes healthy walks starting from the Onyar Civic Center. On the same day, there will also be an open petanque session on the courts located next to the primary care center.
On Thursday the 21st, one of the proposals most clearly aimed at connecting generations will be held. The Espai Actiu, promoted by a student from Institut Vallvera together with the Association of Retirees and Pensioners of Vila-roja, will offer a session with a physiotherapist from the College of Physiotherapists of Catalonia and sports tests aimed at young people.
The final stretch of the week will move to the Font de la Pólvora courtyard. There, a psychomotor skills circuit for preschool children will be organized before closing Friday's day with a concert at three in the afternoon and a bachata class at five in the Civic Center.
The week's program runs until Friday, May 22nd, with activities at the Escola Bressol Cavall Fort, the Centre Cívic Onyar, Font de la Pólvora, and the neighborhood's sports school.
