Girona City Council questions that last Sunday's wind episode remained at level 2 out of 6, as indicated by the Generalitat, after a day in which the city and the Gironès region registered numerous incidents and an unusual impact.
From the council they maintain that the magnitude of the damages and of the actions carried out makes one doubt that the forecast was adjusted. Municipal sources assure that, from April 2023 until now, 24 warnings for wind risk have been counted in Girona and El Gironès. Of that total, 14 were of risk 1 out of 6, 7 of risk 2 out of 6 and 3 of risk 3 out of 6, according to the Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya.
The comparison with those precedents is one of the arguments of the City Council. According to municipal sources, in none of those 24 warnings had the effects been comparable to those of Sunday.
188 actions and dozens of incidents in the city
The Municipal Police of Girona carried out 188 actions due to the wind. Among the registered incidents are obstacles on public roads and damage to vehicles.
The episode also left the fall of some seventy trees and a hundred branches. Also, a score of damages was recorded on building cornices. Police sources reported that they did not remember a similar situation since the 2010 snowfall regarding the fall of trees.
"Since the 2010 snowfall, so many trees had not fallen" - police sources, Girona
From the City Council, they consider that balance points to a lack of foresight on the part of the Govern. In that line, municipal sources state that all of this makes one think that the situation was not well foreseen on this occasion.
The comparison with the February 12 episode
The council compares what happened with the episode of February 12, but in reverse. That day the wind warning was 3 out of 6 and the Generalitat did send an alert to the citizens of Girona. Last Sunday, however, with a level 2 out of 6, no warning was sent to the population's mobile phones.
The City Council defends that the previous forecasts are approximations and that it is preferable to prevent. It also maintains that, if during the same day it is appreciated that the consequences are much more intense, the Govern should modify the adopted measures.
The last precedent with risk 3 out of 6 had been precisely on February 12, when finally the wind did not blow with such intensity. On February 14, a risk 2 out of 6 was also activated in Girona and there were no notable incidents.
Another precedent cited is that of December 23 of last year, likewise with risk 2 out of 6, a day on which a plane tree fell in front of the Rosaleda building, in Devesa park. That was the third tree fall in 2025 in that space.
The other two occasions with risk 3 out of 6 were November 2 and 4, during the Fires, without any notable accidents being recorded.
The Generalitat defends the criterion of warnings
Sources from the Generalitat explained that last Sunday wind gusts reached 68 kilometers per hour in Girona, according to Meteocat data. They also specified that an alert was only sent to the mobile phones in the regions that had level 5 or 6 out of 6.
From the Govern they highlighted the mayor's decision to suspend activities, considering it a good example of the role that municipal plans and local civil protection should have. The same sources remarked that, although the foreseen threshold is not exceeded, a city council can detect a notable situation in a specific point and assess the need to adopt other measures.
