The Mossos d'Esquadra arrested 26 people this Tuesday and dismantled eleven marijuana plantations in an operation deployed in the province of Girona, with 27 searches in a dozen municipalities. The operation started around four in the morning and mobilized more than 600 agents.

The operation targets an organization investigated for indoor marijuana cultivation, drug trafficking, possession of weapons, and money laundering. The action also comes in a context in which the police have warned of the increasingly common use of firearms in settling scores linked to drug trafficking.

The Mossos deployed 600 agents in 27 searches spread across twelve municipalities

The operation was concentrated in Girona, Cassà de la Selva, Riudarenes, L'Escala, Sils, Caldes de Malavella, Brunyola, Llagostera, Bescanó, Celrà, Quart, and Salt. Agents from the DIC, BRIMO, ARRO, Scientific Police, Canine Police, and Citizen Security units participated in the deployment.

During the raids, agents located eleven marijuana plantations and arrested 26 people. They also seized short and long weapons, as well as large sums of cash, although neither the models of the weapons nor the exact amount of money seized have been disclosed for now.

In Girona city, at least two of the searches were carried out in the Font de la Pólvora neighborhood. In one of the inspected homes, agents found an indoor plantation.

Font de la Pólvora already suffered a shootout with two deaths on Saint John's Eve

That same neighborhood was the scene of a shootout on Saint John's Eve in 2024, with two dead and two seriously injured. The main suspect was arrested three months later in Pinos Puente, Granada, and investigators attribute the use of an assault rifle to him.

The presence of weapons in Tuesday's operation aligns with this trend of violence associated with drug trafficking. Two weeks ago, for example, the Mossos seized twelve Kalashnikov rifles in a high-end vehicle intercepted on the AP-7 near Figueres.

More recently, the last shooting with victims linked to drug trafficking occurred on May 16th on Mineria street in Barcelona. There, a gunman shot a 43-year-old man with a record for drug trafficking.

The investigation places the dismantled network in various phases of the business, from indoor cultivation to drug trafficking and money laundering. In the balance of the operation, the agents dismantled eleven plantations and carried out 27 raids on properties in the province of Girona.
