Protecció Civil sent this Saturday afternoon an ES Alert to the mobile phones of people located in six counties of the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees given the forecast of a very intense wind episode during Sunday. The warning affects Solsonès, Berguedà, Ripollès, Alt Empordà, Garrotxa and the north of Cerdanya.

The message asks to avoid unnecessary travel and suspend outdoor activities, especially at medium and high altitudes, between 08:00 and 20:00 on Sunday. The forecast is part of an episode of strong winds that will also be accompanied by swell on the north coast and snow in the westernmost Pyrenees.

"The strong wind will be widespread, but the greatest intensity is forecast in these regions" - Imma Solé, deputy general director of Coordination and Emergency Management of Civil Protection

Maximum level of alert in several regions

The Meteorological Service of Catalonia raised the degree of wind danger to 5 out of 6 in Alt Empordà, Garrotxa, Ripollès, Berguedà and Solsonès. The red warning is forecast between 06:00 and 12:00 on Sunday. In Alt Empordà, Ripollès and Berguedà it will also be maintained between 12:00 and 16:00.

In an update released on March 28, 2026, Meteocat warned of the possibility of maximum gusts exceeding 25 m/s and reiterated the maximum red danger level of 5 out of 6. In addition to these regions, about twenty territories in the northern half of Catalonia and the Camp de Tarragona are under orange alert.

Gusts of more than 140 km/h and risk on the Costa Brava

The State Meteorological Agency had previously activated a red alert for hurricane-force wind in the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees. The forecast indicates that gusts could exceed 140 km/h in areas of Alt Empordà and in high altitudes of Ripollès, Cerdanya and Berguedà.

In that same warning, an extraordinary danger was alerted due to the fall of branches and trees. It was also noted that in the high mountains there will be a very low thermal sensation, which adds difficulty to any movement or activity outdoors.

Civil Protection also warned of an episode of strong swell on the Costa Brava. The agency highlighted that there could be waves higher than 2.5 meters and asked not to approach areas close to the coast.

First measures in Girona and railway disruption

Given this forecast, Girona has suspended outdoor activities and has closed parks and gardens. These are preventive measures to reduce risks in spaces exposed to trees and urban furniture.

There will also be an impact on rail mobility. Renfe will suspend the circulation of lines R11 and R3 on Sunday morning due to the wind episode, on a day marked by the vigilance of emergency services and by recommendations to exercise extreme caution in the north of the country.
