The Generalitat Firefighters have carried out about 40 call-outs between 9:00 PM on Wednesday and 12:30 PM this Thursday due to the strong winds hitting the Girona regions, with special incidence in Empordà. Most of the operations have been related to the fall of trees, branches and other elements on public roads, without any of the services being particularly relevant.
The episode has also forced the closure of the GI 622 road between Vilaür and Sant Mori due to falling trees. One of the municipalities with the most alerts has been Roses, where a significant volume of incidents due to detached objects in the street has been concentrated.
Incidents in Castelló d"Empúries and La Bisbal d"Empordà
In Castelló d"Empúries, the promenade of les Oques has been closed until further notice due to a detachment on the roof of the stands of the football field. The Firefighters intervened around 9:00 AM to secure the sheets and remove those that had flown off. The definitive removal will be in the hands of a company.
Also in La Bisbal d"Empordà, the emergency services have had to act after some panels fell from the canopy of the bus station, in another of the incidents linked to the wind storm.
Alert activated by wind and rough seas
Civil Protection maintains the alert activated for wind storm and rough seas, especially in Alt Empordà, Baix Empordà and the Girona Pyrenees. Gusts can exceed 90 km/h and on the coast waves of more than 2.5 meters are expected, especially north of Cape Creus and at Cape Begur.
During the early morning, the Cap de Begur buoy of Ports de l"Estat recorded at 4:00 AM a wave peak of 6.69 meters high. The latest data from Meteocat place Alt Empordà and Baix Empordà as the areas where the wind blows with more intensity.
Very strong gusts in the north of Girona
The most notable records have been reached in Portbou, in the coll de Belitres, with a maximum gust of 148.3 km/h. In the Darnius Boadella reservoir, 119.2 km/h were measured, in Sant Pere Pescador 97.6 km/h, in Roses 93.6 km/h and in La Bisbal d"Empordà 81 km/h.
Given the persistence of the episode, the authorities recommend securing objects from balconies and terraces, avoiding wooded areas or areas with unstable elements and limiting displacements, especially along the coast and in mountain areas while the storm persists.
