The Mossos d"Esquadra have arrested three men aged 40, 46 and 47 for their alleged involvement in an attempted homicide and an arson offense after a fire broke out in the early hours of the morning in an apartment in the Sant Narcís neighborhood of Girona. The investigation suggests that the arrested individuals allegedly locked a man inside the dwelling and then set fire to the property.
The fire broke out around 3:30 hours in an apartment of a five-story building at number 21 Santander street. Nine Bombers crews were dispatched to the scene, who upon their arrival found the fire totally developed.
Rescue by the balcony and transfer to the Trueta
The victim was able to be rescued by the Firefighters through the balcony of the home. The man was slightly injured by smoke inhalation and was attended to by members of the Medical Emergencies System, who transferred him by ambulance to the Josep Trueta hospital in Girona.
According to health sources, the injured person remains admitted in a state of low severity in this same hospital center.
Preventive eviction of 35 residents
The fire forced the preventive evacuation of 35 residents from the affected block. The temporary confinement of the homes located on both sides of the building was also ordered while the emergency operation was underway.
Once the situation was controlled, the residents were able to return to their homes. In the operation intervened Bombers, the Municipal Police of Girona and the Mossos d'Esquadra.
Arrests during the same Monday
The arrests were carried out throughout Monday, after the investigation unit of the Girona police station took statements from several witnesses and carried out efforts to find evidence. Two of the suspects were arrested at the scene of the events and the third was arrested in the afternoon.
It is expected that the three appear before the court this Wednesday. The Mossos d"Esquadra have confirmed the arrests and keep the investigation open.
The main line of investigation
According to the initial investigations, everything indicates that the arrested individuals would have locked the man in the apartment, without ruling out that he was inside a room, as a result of a disagreement linked to some illegal activity. That situation would have led to an argument and, subsequently, to the fire.
