The Girona City Council keeps open the relocation of fairs and other usual activities of La Devesa with the aim of preserving the park and its trees. The measure was proposed after the fall of several trees in this space, where last year three specimens fell.
The possibility of moving events outside of La Devesa was advanced in last year's December plenary session by the Councillor for Climate Action, Sergi Cot, when he explained that the council was studying relocating events to reduce the impact on the park. Since then, two events held in recent years in La Devesa have already changed location.
Formatgem moves to the Palau de Fires
The first change has been seen this past weekend with the Formatgem festival, Girona of artisan and Catalan cheese, which has been held in the Palau de Fires. In the last editions, the event had taken place on the Devesa promenade. In 2024 it was held on March 2 and 3 and in 2025 on March 15 and 16.
In this case, the decision to take the event to an enclosed venue was made due to adverse weather conditions. On Saturday it rained at some points during the day and on Sunday an episode of wind was recorded.
The World Contest of the Xuixo changes this year
The next event that changes location is the World Xuixo Contest, which will celebrate its sixth edition on Saturday, March 21 in Salvador Espriu square. In 2025, the city hosted the fifth edition in La Rosaleda, an event that crowned the Trias pastry shop, from Santa Coloma de Farners.
The transfer of the competition also points to the will to generate synergies with the Mercat del Lleó. That same strategy was already applied with the popular escudellada held at the beginning of February.
La Devesa continues concentrating activity during the year
The Devesa promenade, the area located behind La Rosaleda and other points of the park continue to host activities throughout the year. Among them is the street market that is set up every Tuesday and Saturday.
In this area, the City Council has recently approved a pilot test to move the entire Tuesday market to the asphalted area that follows the Ter river.
Events pending confirmation in the coming months
Beyond the already known changes, there are events that keep La Devesa in their planning. The Ludivers Festival has announced that it will be held between May 22 and 24 in the gardens of La Devesa. The organization confirmed that location a week ago in a social media post.
Other proposals have not yet communicated either dates or location. This is the case of Birra a Mà, a craft beer festival, which in recent years has been held in early June on the Devesa promenade. Before the pandemic and also in 2022, it took place on the Copa esplanade.
Nor have Tocs de Vi de l"Empordà, which is usually held during a June weekend on the Devesa promenade, and Girobeer, installed for years in that same space, announced their calendar or location for now. In 2024, Girobeer was held between July 3 and 13.
