The province of Girona faces a Tuesday afternoon of risk due to torrential rains, with forecasts of up to 20 liters per square meter in 30 minutes and active alerts in a dozen counties. The Meteorological Service of Catalonia places the period of greatest intensity between 12:00 and 20:00 hours.
The episode will mainly hit the interior and northeast of Girona, but it is accompanied by another front of danger on the coast. While Ripollès and Garrotxa are under a yellow alert for possible floods, the State Meteorological Agency adds wind gusts of up to 60 km/h in l'Empordà and waves of more than three meters.
Protecció Civil activated the flood alert in Girona
Given this forecast, Protecció Civil has activated the alert phase of its flood plan and asks the population to exercise extreme caution throughout the afternoon. The agency recommends staying away from rivers, streams, and ravines in the affected counties.
The highest level of meteorological alert affects Ripollès and Garrotxa. In both counties, the forecast points to precipitation capable of causing rapid water accumulation and flood-related incidents.
L'Alt Empordà, el Pla de l'Estany, el Gironès, and la Selva are also under a yellow alert, as are Osona, el Lluçanès, and el Berguedà. The maximum degree of danger predicted for this period is three out of six.
Another round of rain will arrive on Thursday in central Catalonia
Tuesday's episode will not be the only one this week. The meteorological service has also activated alerts for Thursday afternoon, when another round of torrential rains is expected, possibly extending to other counties in central Catalonia.
In the coastal and pre-coastal areas, the worsening will not be limited to rain. The forecast includes strong winds in l'Empordà and maritime disturbance in the same area, with waves that could exceed three meters.
The hours of greatest risk this Tuesday will be concentrated between 12:00 and 20:00, with a yellow alert in Ripollès and Garrotxa and a maximum danger level of three out of six.
