The Girona City Council has implemented a new artificial intelligence-based tool that guarantees the anonymity of personal data in public documents published on the municipal transparency portal. The system has been operational in various municipal services since November, when its pilot phase began.

Automation of Anonymity in Public Documents

The tool automatically identifies names, addresses, and other personal data in both texts and PDF documents. Each detected piece of data is marked with a unique tag, which allows maintaining the original context and ensuring the traceability of each document. Until now, this process was done manually, which slowed down publication and increased the risk of human errors.

Internal Operations and Management Improvements

The system incorporates its own processing mechanisms, whitelists to prevent certain data from appearing as anonymous, metrics to monitor performance, and a priority queue system. These functions aim to ensure stable operation even when processing large volumes of documents.

"This tool is documented in the #DigiCanvis Observatory as an innovative initiative of local administration" - Maria Àngels Planas, Councilor for Procurement, Heritage, and IT Services

According to the city council, the previous manual process exposed information to potential human errors, which could compromise data quality and compliance with data protection regulations. Automation represents an advance in the management of transparency and privacy protection in Girona.

"It was launched in November in a pilot phase and is already being used in various municipal services, which are working together to adjust the white lists and improve their operation" - Maria Àngels Planas, Councilor for Procurement, Heritage, and IT Services

The initiative reinforces the municipal commitment to the protection of personal data and efficiency in the publication of public information, adapting to legal requirements and citizens' demand for transparency.
