Meteocat has activated a yellow alert for heavy rain for Barcelona and Girona this Friday, May 15, in an episode that will be accompanied by a drop in temperatures of between 4 and 6 ºC due to the entry of a cold front associated with a polar air mass.
The forecast combines storms and hail in counties of the coast and pre-coast with snow at relatively low altitudes for the season in the Pyrenees and even on the summit of Montseny. The thermal drop will also leave late frosts in mountainous areas and in some hollows in the north of Central Catalonia.
The front will leave more than 100 liters in l'Alt Empordà between Thursday and Friday
During Thursday, May 14, precipitation will be intermittent in the northernmost part of Catalonia. Meteocat places the main points of attention in Alt Ripollès, Alta Garrotxa, and sectors near the Albera mountain range, in l'Alt Empordà.
In addition to the yellow alert forecast for Barcelona and Girona on Friday, the meteorological service has issued an alert for accumulated rain in l'Alt Empordà due to the possibility of exceeding 100 liters in 24 hours between Thursday night and Friday dawn.
The entry of cold air will also be noticeable in the snow line. On Thursday, it will be around 1,800 meters in the Pyrenees and the western Pre-Pyrenees.
On Friday, the snow line will drop to 1,200 meters and the risk of storms will increase
On Friday morning, the snow line will drop to 1,200 meters on the northern slope of the Pyrenees. In the afternoon, the forecast adds snow on the summit of Montseny, with a snow line around 1,600 meters.
At the same time, the map of showers and storms will expand towards more populated counties. Meteocat forecasts rain with the possibility of hail between La Selva, Gironès, El Moianès, the interior of Baix Empordà, El Vallès, El Maresme, El Barcelonès, and sectors of Baix Llobregat.
In parallel, the irruption of cold air will favor late frosts in the Pyrenees, the Pre-Pyrenees, and in some hollows in the north of Central Catalonia, an unusual change in weather in the middle of the second half of May.
The meteorological models that Meteocat works with indicate that temperatures will rise again during the second half of May.
