A 58-year-old worker suffered several leg fractures yesterday when a metal piece fell on him during the assembly of an attraction in Les Firetes de Lleida. The work accident occurred around 2:00 PM in the fairgrounds.
The injured person received on-site attention from emergency services and was subsequently evacuated to the Arnau de Vilanova hospital. The patrols of the Mossos d'Esquadra and the Guardia Urbana went to the scene to manage the incident along with the ambulances from the Sistema d'Emergències Mèdiques (SEM).
The breakage of a hitch caused the incident
Hugo García, president of the fairgoers, explained that the event occurred while the High Energy attraction was being installed. This pendulum, which spins sideways and on itself, was one of the novelties planned for this edition of the fair.
"It was during the assembly of the attraction when one of the hooks that held two pieces broke" - Hugo García, president of the fairground workers
García detailed that the operator was injured precisely at that moment of mechanical failure. The affected machinery was being prepared for its start-up after being moved to its final location within the Les Firetes premises.
Technical documentation passes reviews
The president of the fairground workers assured that the installation has all the legal requirements met and that the staff has the corresponding insurance. He stressed that it is a unique attraction in Spain whose safety is guaranteed.
"The Mossos d'Esquadra have reviewed all the documentation and Labor Inspection corroborates that everything is in order" - Hugo García, president of the fair organizers
After verifying the documentation, the authorities allowed the assembly to continue so that the attraction is available to the public. Two engineers hired by the organization will corroborate that all conditions remain optimal after the incident.
