The Metropolitan Area of Barcelona has begun the rehabilitation of the set of workers' houses on Pons passage in the Torrassa neighborhood, in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat. The intervention transforms these historic buildings into five social rental housing units with an investment of 1,249,372.19 euros.

The estimated duration of the works is 12 months. Once the work is completed, the management of the properties will fall to the Municipal Housing Service to integrate them into the city's public housing stock.

The project reconfigures the interior without altering the protected facade

The original houses date from 1925 and were built to house the migrant workforce that arrived in Barcelona for the International Exposition. The city council acquired the complex after receiving neighborhood complaints about its condition and recognizing its heritage value, which led to its cataloging within the Special Plan for the Protection of Local Architectural Heritage.

The technical proposal groups the existing units to create five larger homes with a through-type typology. This distribution eliminates shared interior courtyards and optimizes cross-ventilation as well as natural light entry.

The performance scrupulously respects the original volume and preserves the ornamental elements of the facades. The interior design adapts to current regulations while maintaining the constructive essence of the last century.

Passive strategies to improve climatic comfort

The rehabilitation incorporates energy efficiency criteria aligned with the sustainability protocol of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona. The improvements include strengthening thermal insulation and the creation of vegetated patios that help regulate temperature.

These measures seek to guarantee the comfort of future tenants through passive solutions that reduce dependence on active climate control systems.

The total budget allocated to this operation amounts to 1,249,372.19 euros. The execution calendar sets a deadline of one year to complete the transformation of the property.
