The municipal group of ERC+EUiA has demanded from the City Council of L'Hospitalet a firmer commitment to the use of Catalan, at a time when only 10% of the municipality's residents speak it habitually. The request has been formulated within the framework of the Correllengua Agermanat 2026 and places the focus on the role of local institutions.

ERC+EUiA calls for applying the municipal linguistic promotion plan

The republican spokesperson, Jaume Graells, has urged the municipal government to apply the Pla d'Impuls del català and to reinforce measures to extend the social use of the language in the city. Among the demands raised is a greater presence of Catalan in institutions and a habitual use by the representatives of the local executive.

Graells has expressly requested that the mayor and the government councilors habitually express themselves in Catalan, considering that the administration must act as a reference in the promotion of the country's language.

More resources for the newly arrived population

The formation also requests more resources for the Centre de Normalització Lingüística, with the objective of imparting Catalan courses aimed at the newly arrived population. The proposal seeks to facilitate the learning of the language and expand its knowledge among new residents of L'Hospitalet.

"We must promote conversation groups and recover that perception that the grandfathers and grandmothers of immigration had, who considered that linguistic immersion was necessary for their grandchildren and children to have a future. For our population to have a future, we must guarantee them the right to learn the language of the country" - Jaume Graells, republican spokesperson

The demand is framed within a new edition of the Correllengua Agermanat 2026, from where ERC+EUiA has once again put on the table the situation of Catalan in L'Hospitalet. The fact that only 10% of the inhabitants use it habitually concentrates a good part of the concern expressed by the municipal group, which demands concrete measures and a visible involvement of the council.

The petition involves strengthening courses, conversation groups, and institutional exemplary conduct, with the idea that the City Council assumes an active role in the normalization of Catalan in one of the most populated cities of Catalonia.
