This Wednesday, April 8, demolition work begins on the building of the old Sagrera freight station, in the Sant Andreu district. The action will last for the next few weeks and will begin with the removal of asbestos and the demolition of the interior of the property.

The councilor of Sant Andreu, Marta Villanueva, has indicated that starting on April 13, the demolition of the structure will begin. The intervention is part of the urban transformation of this area in northern Barcelona, one of the areas undergoing full reorganization linked to La Sagrera.

First phase with asbestos removal

The first works will focus on removing the asbestos present in the building and advancing in the interior demolition before attacking the main structure. The planned schedule places that next step from April 13, already in a more visible phase of the demolition.

Villanueva has framed these works within the reconfiguration of the area and has defended that they will serve to "connect and re-stitch the city", in reference to the role this area will have in the urban transformation of the Sagrera railway environment.

The demolition continues despite the opposition of entities

The demolition goes ahead despite the opposition expressed by entities such as Promoció del Transport Públic and the Fòrum del Transport Català, which have positioned themselves against the action on the building of the old freight station.

In parallel with the works, during the execution of the works a Civil War bunker was located. Regarding this finding, the councilwoman has explained that the City Council is working with the Servei d"Arqueologia to address its conservation and integration into the future of the area.

The municipal official has assured that the demolition process will not compromise this heritage element located in the subsoil of the enclosure. The horizon for the future of the bunker is set for the end of 2025, a deadline that the district manages to define what solution is adopted at this point of the old Sagrera freight station.
