The works of the new coastal path between La Arrabassada and La Savinosa, which began on April 29 in Tarragona, have led to a complaint from Grup Gata and the Xarxa de Vigilància Ambiental TGN for damage to part of the fossil dune located next to La Arrabassada beach, within the Savinosa estate.

The conflict arises when a project pending for 54 years was already underway and with previous conservation commitments. The groups maintain that the works have affected an environment that should have been preserved, despite the fact that during the processing it had been agreed to maintain the fossilized rocks, a Civil War bunker, and protected species.

Environmentalists ask to stop works started on April 29

In a statement, the two entities demanded the "immediate" cessation of work, a "transparent investigation of the facts" and sanctions for those responsible for the damage detected in this stretch of the Tarragona coastline.

The works began on April 29.

The activists report that the opening of a parallel track has entailed the felling, which they consider "unnecessary," of holm oaks and pines over 50 years old. They also report damage to the Crithmo-Limonietum community near the rocky coastline.

That vegetation had already focused part of the allegations presented to the project. The discussion was not new, because the protection of the flora of the area was among the sensitive points before the start of the work on the Savinosa estate.

The route will add 26,000 square meters after decades of projects

The new coastal path must connect Arrabassada and Savinosa with a 700-meter route through the interior of the estate. The action will incorporate 26,000 square meters of public space and seeks to finally open a long-announced stretch on the maritime facade of Tarragona.

The route will be 700 meters through the interior of the estate.

The Tarragona Provincial Council and the Government Sub-delegation, responsible for the works and owners of the area, avoided commenting on the complaint. Both administrations indicated that they will analyze how the work has been carried out before making a statement.

The initial project forecast sets six months of works to premiere this autumn this new section of the GR between La Arrabassada and La Savinosa.
