The Mossos d'Esquadra arrested a 52-year-old man for an alleged crime of assault and another of damage after a stabbing that occurred on Sunday afternoon in a bar on Rio de Janeiro street, in the Barcelona district of Nou Barris.
The victim, a supporter of CE Europa, had to be taken to the hospital after being stabbed. The alert call came in at 7:11 PM about a fight involving a group of club fans, an incident that adds to other stabbings recorded in Barcelona in recent weeks.
The fight started in a Nou Barris bar and ended with an arrest
When the officers arrived, the police were already aware of an altercation inside a establishment on the street. During the fight, the arrested man also allegedly broke the door of the premises, a fact for which the Mossos also attribute to him an alleged crime of damage.
The detainee is 52 years old and the investigation identifies him as the alleged perpetrator of the stabbing. For now, the police action keeps the proceedings open for the stabbing and for the damages caused in the bar.
The stabbing coincides with other recent assaults in Barcelona
In parallel, the fan group Eskapulats released a statement about what happened. In that text, they stated that the injured person is one of their members and linked the assault to an ideological motivation.
"Any attempt to whitewash the aggressor's ideological motivation, lie about the origin of the attempted murder, or create doubt about the context will be met with our full opposition to preserve the truth" - Eskapulats, CE Europa fan group
The same statement adds that the aggressor was a 52-year-old Spanish fascist and states that fascism murders and feels impunity. It also points out that no aggression against its members will go unanswered.
Barcelona has experienced other stabbing incidents in recent months. On May 24, there was another stabbing near La Pau station during a mass fight, and on May 8, a knife wound to the buttock was recorded in the area of the Casino de Barcelona.
During the weekend of May 2 and 3, moreover, a minor was arrested for homicide on Cera street, in Ciutat Vella, and another minor was injured in the Fòrum area.
