The Mossos d"Esquadra have arrested a man of 67 years old as the alleged perpetrator of the violent death of his mother, a woman of 92 years old, in a socio-health center in the district of Sant Andreu, in Barcelona. The event occurred this Friday shortly before nine in the morning.
It was the arrested person himself who called 112 to report what had happened. Following that alert, police intervention was activated and the case remained in the hands of the investigators.
Open investigation in Sant Andreu
The Criminal Investigation Division of the Mossos has taken charge of the proceedings to clarify the causes of the events. The investigation remains open and, for now, no further details have emerged about the specific circumstances of the death.
The arrest was carried out after the suspect himself called 112, who alerted of the crime in the socio-health center. The Mossos maintain the investigation under reserve while they advance in the reconstruction of what happened.
Institutional condemnation
The Departament d"Igualtat i Feminisme and the Ajuntament de Barcelona have condemned the case as a "feminicide". The department has pointed out that it is the first feminicide of these characteristics so far this year in Catalonia.
In the official balance sheet released by the Departament, since data began to be collected in 2012, 160 femicides have been recorded in Catalonia. Of that total, 150 correspond to women and 10 to girls or adolescents.
The same statistic collects that the number of sons and daughters who have been left orphans by sexist violence exceeds one hundred in the last decade.
Commitment of the City Council
The Ajuntament de Barcelona has expressed its rejection for what happened and has committed to make all necessary efforts to advance in the guarantees of the right of women to live without violence.
The death of the woman in Sant Andreu again places the focus on violence against women and on the institutional response to events that are now under judicial and police investigation.
