The Barcelona City Council will comprehensively reform the Can Dragó Park, in the Porta neighborhood, in Nou Barris, with an action valued at 3.42 million euros and an estimated execution period of one year. The intervention is part of the municipal Climate Plan and will affect an area of more than 10,600 m².

The project seeks to naturalize the environment and convert this space into a climate refuge during episodes of intense heat. The action also plans to expand green areas, triple the surface area of the children's playground and incorporate a calisthenics area and another with equipment for older people.

More shade, play and accessibility in Can Dragó

The reform has been designed with the intention of adapting the park to more diverse uses and improving its daily functioning. Among the planned measures is the guarantee of total accessibility for people with reduced mobility, one of the conditions included in the redesign of the space.

Part of the actions also respond to neighborhood requests raised in several participatory processes developed during 2024. Among these demands is the adaptation of the tracks that surround the sports complex and that the neighborhood uses for running or walking, a point especially used in this area of Nou Barris.

The relocation of the dog area, one of the first actions

One of the first works will be the relocation of the dog area. The new space will be built where the petanque courts are now, between the l"Alzamora football field and the sidewalk and lanes of La Meridiana. With this change, the council intends to move the animals away from the nearest buildings.

The current dog area was inaugurated in July 2019 on Rio de Janeiro avenue with Andreu Nin promenade. Its location then generated opposing positions between users and residents of nearby properties, who demanded its relocation due to the nuisances derived from its use. The construction works of that space even came to be paralyzed.

The new relocation is planned seven years after the launch of the current area. The City Council foresees that the new enclosure will be organized into two differentiated linear pieces, a configuration designed to minimize the acoustic impact on the most immediate surroundings.

Works with open passage for pedestrians and access to facilities

During the execution of the works, pedestrian circulation will be maintained in the surroundings. Access to existing facilities and shops will also be guaranteed, as well as entry to the Can Dragó sports area, one of the points with most daily use in the affected area.

The intervention in Can Dragó Park will entail one of the most relevant remodels planned in this sector of Porta and redefines a space widely used by residents, athletes and families, with the municipal will to make it greener, more livable and better prepared for the hottest months.
