La Pastisseria Ideal will close its doors in Gràcia after 107 years of activity due to a lack of generational succession. The closure has mobilized dozens of neighborhood residents in recent days, with queues in the street to say goodbye to a historic business and a final party organized in front of the establishment.

The paradox of the farewell is that it comes at a time when the pastry shop is still operating and maintains a loyal clientele, but it has not found family continuity to remain open. Miquel Àngel Álvarez, owner of the establishment, admits that the neighborhood's response has overwhelmed him and is confident of maintaining high activity during the last week.

The closure comes as the pastry shop continues to fill the street

The farewell was celebrated with music by the duo Tournessol, snacks, cava toasts, and gift distribution. During the day, long queues of customers occupied the street to enter for the last time a place that is part of the daily life of Gràcia.

Álvarez summarized the neighborhood's reaction as follows.

"I'm gobsmacked" - Miquel Àngel Álvarez, owner of Pastisseria Ideal

The pastry chef also explained that he is receiving "a lot of affection from the clientele." This response has accompanied the final stretch of a business known for its tortells, the queen's biscuit, and cream xuixos.

Among customers, the closure leaves a tone of personal loss. María Antonia, a regular at the establishment, says she experiences it "with great sadness" due to the friendly and homemade treatment, and recalls that for years she used to have breakfast there every day with her husband before he was admitted to a nursing home.

The owners want the buyer to keep the xuixos and the usual recipes

The transfer is not yet finalized, although at the moment there is, in the owner's words, "one and a half candidates." The family's main condition is that whoever takes over maintains the business's line and respects the preparations that have identified the pastry shop for decades.

Álvarez set this requirement with a specific condition for the sale.

"Whoever takes over has to continue in the same line as us. My brother would stay with them for a while to be able to make the same xuixos and pastries" - Miquel Àngel Álvarez, owner of Pastisseria Ideal

The family's intention is to preserve the original recipe book even with new equipment. A large part of the bond that the business has maintained with the neighborhood clientele, who identify the establishment by very specific items and a form of proximity service, is played out in this continuity.

A neighbor summarized it humorously when talking about the cream xuixos, defining them as "addictive" and "dangerous." Another neighbor and friend of the owners lamented the closure because, in his opinion, a bakery "that works and is local" is disappearing.

The farewell of Ideal joins the recent closure of other emblematic businesses in the area, including Forn Santa Clara, Ferreteria Camps, Merceria Tarragona, and Forn Ideal.
